The User-Friendly and Versatile GPS Tracker
When it comes to using and purchasing a GPS tracker there are three basic options: Real-Time, On-Demand and Passive. What’s the difference?
An Real-Time GPS Tracker
Real-Time trackers are always tracking, always working, and ready to go whenever a car, truck, plane, train, or any other vehicle moves. You can view a complete history of any movement the vehicle made since the device was installed (assuming it’s kept activated). You’ll know the route, the times and locations of the vehicles ignition-on and ignition-off events along with many other reporting capabilities. This type of tracker is great for fleet tracking and teen tracking.
An On-Demand GPS Tracker
On-Demand GPS trackers receive and record a location either when you tell it to or when an alert is triggered. On the RMT website you will have a list of your device(s). You select the device you want to locate, click the button, and the location and address is displayed. On-Demand GPS Trackers from RMT can also be set up to alert you on disconnect or geofence crossings. On-Demand GPS trackers use less cellular air-time and have a lower, usually annual, activation fee.
Passive GPS Systems
Passive GPS trackers are battery operated devices that track everywhere the device or vehicle has traveled. Passive GPS trackers have to be recovered to display the paths and locations of where the device has traveled. Passive GPS trackers do not have a annual or monthly charge because the devices don’t use cellular connectivity.

How to Choose Between GPS Systems
So, how do you know if you need an active or passive GPS tracker? Typically, transportation companies with large fleets use active tracking systems, so that they can track driver movements live (in addition to idle time and other details). You can certainly instal an active gps tracker on a vehicle that’s just a personal vehicle, it’s up to you.
To save on battery life and other details, passive trackers are generally used when it comes to tracking a vehicle that you own. Or for example a boat, something you may only use during certain parts of the year. Every situation is unique, so the best way to determine what you need out of a GPS is to speak with a qualified Rocky Mountain Tracking agent.
